Destroy This Memory
I was very fortunate to attend the ‘Landscape and Eschatology’ symposium at Tate Britain a couple of weeks back. Set up alongside the John Martin exhibition, a number of key academics and artists spoke on Landscape, City and Apocalypse. A topic that felt somehow unnervingly current. The highlight of the day however had to Richard Misrach, speaking of the close affinity to apocalypse...

Tomomi Ono
Tomomi Ono’s central theme which runs consistently throughout her work is that of human existence – and existence in general. While she has tackled that subject by focusing on the smallest forms of life in her earlier lithographs, the ‘seed series’, she shifts her focus to the immensity of the universe in the ‘sky series’.

Nyskjaeret
Nyskjaeret in Svalbard Photo: Max McClure
Alex Hartley searched for and discovered Nyskjaeret in 2004. The island had been revealed by the melting ice of a retreating glacier. Alex was the first person to set foot on the island. It’s about the size of a football pitch (though a third of the island had disappeared back into the sea by the time of the 2011 expedition). It is...

Manchester International Festival
Many thanks to Gemma Connell and everyone involved in organizing a great couple of days at the Manchester International Festival. A series of talks, discussions and highlights including 1395 Days without Red, The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic, Music Boxes and a tour of Crash of the Elysium made it a fantastic introduction to the festival. Also great to meet all fellow Jerwood recipients for...

Beyond Angels, Elephants, Good Intentions and Red-Nose Rebellion: what is the future for art in the public realm?
Last Friday I attended a very interesting conference in Bristol in relation to the future of public art. Key speakers included Dr Paul O’Neill (Curator, artist, writer), Andrea Schlieker (Curator, Folkestone Triennial), Mark Ball (Artistic Director, London International Festival...
During this last weekends podcamp project I was fortunate to work with Charlie Whinney. Fellow Falmouth graduate and a master with wood. He helped the young careers create some fantastic shelters and gave them and steam wood bending demonstration which I have to admit being even more excited about than the kids!

Cultural Experience!
Monday was a wonderfully sunny day! I spent it with some of the FC team and Ruth from the AND Festival looking at the FC woodlands which exist in around the Manchester and Liverpool region. These woodlands offer an entirely different experience to somewhere like Grizedale, however in many ways aim to fore fill the same social needs. ‘The Dream’ by spanish Artsist, Juame Plensa is...
